Chicago beat San Diego 9-7 on June 30.
San Diego struck first in the first when Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a solo homer to left. Chicago answered in the bottom half when Carson Kelly singled home Seiya Suzuki to tie it.
The Cubs took control in the second. Dansby Swanson hit a solo homer to center, then Alex Bregman followed later in the inning with a three-run homer, scoring Kevin Alcántara and Pete Crow-Armstrong to make it 5-1.
Manny Machado cut into the lead in the third with a two-run homer, but Chicago kept adding on. Michael Busch homered in the fifth, Swanson added his second homer of the game later that inning, and Crow-Armstrong homered in the sixth to push the Cubs ahead 9-3.
San Diego made it close in the eighth. Gavin Sheets hit a three-run homer, then Tatis followed with his second homer of the game to cut it to 9-7.
Matthew Boyd earned the win after allowing three runs over five innings. JP Sears took the loss after allowing six runs over 4.2 innings. Ryan Rolison recorded the save.
