The A's jumped out fast. Zack Gelof and Lawrence Butler each drove in runs in the 1st to build a 4-0 lead. Oakland had all the momentum.
Then Reynolds changed everything.
His solo home run in the 6th got Pittsburgh on the board β 4-1, but finally on the board. Then in the 7th, Reynolds connected again β this time a two-run shot that put the Pirates ahead 5-4. The comeback was real.
Brandon Lowe added a solo homer in the 9th for insurance. The Pirates held on from there.
The Comeback
Reynolds finished 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. His first homer ended a shutout bid. His second one gave Pittsburgh their first lead of the night β and it held.
Bryan Reynolds is now 4-for-4 with two home runs in this game. The Pirates are now 37-37 on the season. The A's fall to 36-37.
What It Means
Both teams entered at .500 and needed this game. Reynolds made sure his team walked out with the W. Two homers, three RBIs, and a comeback that nobody saw coming after the 1st inning.
The Pirates are treading water in the NL Wild Card race β 37-37 puts them in the hunt but with little margin for error. Every win matters at this point in the season.
